1. Unconfessed Sin — March 9, 2025
The Gospel of Matthew describes John the Baptist with a poem from Isaiah 40. In this poem, the Lord leads his people in a grand parade toward freedom. But along the way, there are a series of obstacles—mountains that need removing. As the Lord leads us toward freedom today, there are certain "mountains" that continue to inhibit us from experiencing fullness of life in Christ. The first of these obstacles, as we explore in this class, is the loneliness generated by unconfessed sin.
2. Inner Chaos — March 16, 2025
The second "mountain" in our series is the constant inner noise that threatens to distract us. We look at the consequences of leaving this inner chaos to run wild, and we look at Jesus' discipline of solitude as a possible way forward.
3. Wealth — March 23, 2025
In this class, we examine the Bible's complex perspective on wealth. Material possessions have a unique way of inhibiting our relationship with Jesus. We also look at the ancient discipline of simplicity as a way of removing this "mountain".
4. Forgiveness — March 30, 2025
Unfortunately, this class did not record.
5. Disembodied Spirituality — April 6, 2025
What is the purpose of fasting? Building heavily on Scot McKnight's book Fasting, we survey the various occasions and purposes of fasting in the Bible. Fasting puts into practice physically what we are experiencing spiritually. It unites our bodies with our spirits. Anyone who thinks spirituality is about escaping the body, fasting is a useful exercise.
6. Forgetfulness — April 13, 2025
In Deuteronomy 8, God warns Israel not to forget about him and his generosity when they enter the Promised Land. Humans are forgetful creatures. So in this final class of the series, we look at a variety of ways to interact with the Bible that will foster our memory of who God is and what he has done.
