The book of Micah remains a powerful critique of social sin and economic malpractice. In this introductory session, we get an overview of the historical background behind the book and consider what it might have felt like to be a prophet in Micah's time.
2. Micah's Vision of Meltdown — May 4, 2025

3. Moral Mayhem — May 11, 2025
Micah has made clear in his opening chapter that disaster is coming to Jerusalem. But why? What have the people done that prompted this catastrophe? In chapters 2 and 3, Micah accuses the wealthy and powerful of the sins that caused the calamity. In this class, we examine three oracles and imagine what Micah might have said to today's society.
4. The Lawsuit — May 18, 2025
In chapter 6, Micah calls on the mountains to bear witness as God levels a covenant lawsuit against his people. In this class, we reflect on the fact that the many are held responsible for the sins of the few. We also reflect on Micah's call to covenant faithfulness, which he summarizes as doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God.
5. Prophetic Tasks — May 25, 2025
A prophet has two main tasks: to penetrate the moral numbness of those who have accepted the status quo by publicly expressing the pain of God and others, and to help people to imagine a new alternative future which arises out of God's faithfulness. In this class, we unpack these two tasks and see how Micah accomplishes both in 3:9–4:5.
